COVID-19, Migration & Challenges to Women-Led Entrepreneurship in Mexico

Join the Center for Global Engagement for a panel discussion addressing economic and social challenges in Mexico. Fabiola Lara, co-founder and creative director of tlali·pani, will moderate a discussion with Eva Lepiz, a Mexican photographer and visual educator, and Jiceel Luis, a Mexican researcher and educator. Both panelists are from Oaxaca, Mexico, and will share their research and lived experiences, including the impact of the pandemic and migration.

Lepiz earned a bachelor's degree in architecture. Later, her passion for aesthetics and personal contact with people led her to pursue a career in photography. She does documentary, editorial and commercial work. She has taught in villages for eight years. She explores issues related to family, religion, migration and the syncretism among cultures. An internationally-recognized documentary photographer, her work has been featured in various outlets, such as National Geographic, Washington Post, and NYT Review.

Luis is a native Oaxacan, researcher and passionate educator focused on helping local communities. She serves as the Oaxaca-based coordinator for tlali·pani, a lifestyle brand that partners with skilled artisans to create home products and curate learning experiences.

Lara is a Mexican-American, California-based global educator and passionate advocate of children’s rights and gender equity. She co-founded tlali·pani with her husband, Sabith Khan, rooted in the joint belief that a lifestyle should be based on respect for others and the environment, appreciation for craft processes and continuous learning.
